About the Opportunity:

An opening exists for a part-time Cook to join the culinary team at Portal Village Retirement Community. Working in consultation with the Director of Culinary Services, the Cook prepares meals for our residents in accordance with all required food safety regulations.  Hours for the position are 5:30 am to 1:30 pm, 2 days per week (total 15 hours per week).

Start rate $17.80 per hour, increases to $18.20 after 375 hours are worked, plus .60 cents in lieu of benefits payment also.

Skills Required

  • Demonstrated leadership and the ability to prepare meals for retirement community which houses approximately 150 residents.
  • Leads by example and supports the Dietary team with effective problem solving and process coordination.
  • Ability to prioritize work and ensure timely completion of tasks.
  • Possess efficient time management skills and be able to multi-task.
  • Possess strong communication skills to deal with others effectively.
  • Previous experience with meal preparation in a restaurant or institutional setting preferred.  (Red Seal Certification and Culinary Diploma preferred).
  • Must demonstrate a commitment to resident meal service.
  • Ability to meet or exceed the physical demands of the position.
  • Must be capable of following written and oral directions.
  • Be flexible in routine and assist in other areas as required.
  • Valid, current safe food handling certificate or willingness to obtain.
  • Understand safe food handling practices to minimize risk of cross contamination.
  • Must be capable of safe operation of commercial equipment required in performing duties.
  • Demonstrate the ability to meet regular attendance requirements.
  • Demonstrate the ability to maintain confidentiality at all times and display an understanding of professional guidelines required when dealing with residents.
  • Basic WHMIS instruction required, as well as annual updates.
